For this year’s Advent series, we turn to Matthew’s Gospel to examine the unexpected figures highlighted in the genealogy of Christ—the women. Not only is it surprising that Matthew would include these figures in his genealogy, but based on their stories, these women appear to be unlikely candidates for the lineage of the Messiah. Why did Matthew include them? What is it about their stories that pointed to our Lord’s coming? And how did Emmanuel come and meet with them?
