As another Summer ends and relaxed schedules are replaced with new activities and commitments, it’s time once again to renew our commitment to the worship team rehearsal.  We’ve all heard the old saying “there’s no ‘I’ in team” and our worship ministry is made up of teams.  Even though you personally may not feel like you need to practice, rehearsal is a team building activity.  We need to develop our teams in the following ways:

Musical Development:

Rehearsal allows time to ensure that:

  • Everyone is familiar with the music selected;
  • Everyone knows what and where they will be playing/singing in each piece of music;
  • Everyone knows how each song will begin and end;
  • Everyone knows the flow and layout of each song;
  • Everyone develops an understanding of the team leader’s “style” and method of communication.

Rehearsal is also necessary to increase in musical ability by allowing time for:

  • More experienced musicians/singers to help less experienced;
  • Learning new songs and/or musical styles;
  • Musical experimentation;
  • Developing a familiarity with the style of a number of different musicians/singers and learning to adjust your own style to complement the same.

Ministry Development:

Attendance at rehearsal is necessary to develop an awareness and understanding of the theme(s) of a particular service and how the Arts in Worship Ministry will be used to develop and complement those themes.  It allows the participant several days to reflect on the service prior to participation.  It is also one of the places where an awareness and understanding of overall vision for the ministry and for the church can be developed.

Community Development:

Its fun to work with your friends!  Development of relationships and an understanding of team members are necessary for effective and satisfying ministry.  Time spent at rehearsal in conversation, sharing about our day, lives and faith is valuable in forming connections and welcoming new team members.

See  YOU at rehearsal!
